City Council Approves Plan for Skate Park in Downtown

During tonight’s City Council meeting, Council authorized the Mayor or City Manager to contract with American Ramp Company for the construction of a new skate park. The contract was sourced through a competitive bidding process. The skate park will be located under the interstate bridge near Magic Island.

“Our young people have been asking for safe, fun places to hang out with their friends. This skate park will create opportunities for physical activity and social interactions,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “With the help of local and national skaters, we have worked to build a park that will cater to both beginners and experts.”

The proposed design includes two bank ramps, 15 quarter pipes, four half pipes, grind ledges, slant pads, spines, jump boxes, roll-ins and more. Several safety features have been included in the design including fastener-free riding surfaces, baluster guardrails, maxgrip polyester powder coat to create extra corrosion protection and grip and tamper-resistant hardware. All steel ramp components of the skate park are also covered by a 20-year limited warranty.

"Adults often stress the importance of outside play," said Capital High School Junior Alvy Robinson. "This skate park would give us a place that we feel comfortable to do that while having fun with our friends."

The skate park is expected to be completed and opened to the public in Spring 2021. Admission to the skate park will be free.
