Mayor Goodwin Issues Statement on Passing of Former Governor and U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin issued the following statement on the passing of former West Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller.
“Senator Rockefeller dedicated his life to serving the people of the Mountain State. From his earliest days as a VISTA volunteer to his years as Governor and United States Senator, his commitment to West Virginia and its people never wavered.
“He understood that public service was about people and relationships, and he worked to make sure those who needed a voice had one. Whether advocating for coal miners and their families, supporting our veterans or expanding access to healthcare through programs like the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), he worked to improve the lives of West Virginians and people across our nation.
“I was blessed to work with Senator Rockefeller and had such deep admiration for him. His compassion, his dedication and his love for the people of West Virginia left a lasting impression on me. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to learn from him and witness his commitment to serving others.
“Senator Rockefeller chose West Virginia and made its people his life’s work. His legacy is reflected in the opportunities he helped create, the communities he championed and the generations of West Virginians who have benefited from his leadership.
“Booth and I are praying for Sharon, their children and grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him.”
