City of Charleston News / Fall to Spring Compost Pickup

Compost Available for Pick Up Beginning November 1 -  the end of March.

The City of Charleston will give away free compost at its compost facility on Hanna Drive (see directions below) November 1 – March 31. Compost can be picked up Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The compost facility will be closed on all holidays.   

 

Operators will be available to help load the compost, but you must bring your own truck or trailer. There is no limit to how much compost individuals and businesses can pick up. For more information, please call (304) 348-6458.

 

Directions

From Huntington:

  • From I-64 E, take exit 53 to WV-25 E/10th St in Dunbar.
  • Turn left onto WV-25 E/10th St – travel for 433 ft
  • Turn left onto WV-25 E/Dunbar Ave – travel for 3.6 mi (Dunbar Ave changes to 7th Ave)
  • Turn left onto 26th St W - travel for 289 ft
  • Turn right onto Washington St W – travel for 0.1 mi
  • Turn left onto Hanna Dr – travel for 0.5 mi
  • Turn Right immediately after church. There is a sign on the utility pole at this intersection that reads “Compost.”  Compost is at the top of the hill – travel for 0.7 mi

 

From the North take Interstate I-77/79 South:

  • Get on I-77/79 S and take exit 101 for I-64 W – travel for 0.2 mi
  • Keep right to continue on Exit 58C, follow signs for US-60/Washington St/Civic Center and merge onto US-119 S/Bigley Ave – travel for 0.4 mi
  • Continue straight onto Bigley Ave. – travel for 0.2 mi
  • Turn right onto Washington St W – travel for 1.7 mi
  • Continue straight to stay on W Washington St at the Sissonville Dr/WV-25 intersection – travel for 0.5 mi
  • Turn right onto Hanna Dr – travel for 0.5 mi
  • Turn Right immediately after church. There is a sign on the utility pole at this intersection that reads “Compost.”  Compost is at the top of the hill – travel for 0.7 mi
