Residents impacted by flooding who need cleaning and recovery supplies should call WV211 at 2-1-1. Our storm response team will coordinate getting supplies to residents who need them.

WANT TO DONATE SUPPLIES?
Cleaning and recovery supply donations can now be dropped off at United Way of Central WV, 1 United Way Square.

STORM RESPONSE UPDATE | AUGUST 19, 5:05 PM 

Response and recovery efforts continue across Charleston following the August 16 flooding. City crews, state and local partners, nonprofit organizations, volunteers and community members continue working to assess damage, clear debris and connect impacted residents with resources. 

HERE'S WHERE THINGS STAND: 

50+ DAMAGE SURVEYS RECEIVED 
As of this morning, 51 damage surveys had been submitted. If your home, business or property sustained damage, please complete the survey. 

The more residents who complete the survey, the more complete the picture of the flooding's impact will be. This information helps local and state emergency management officials assess the overall impact and identify community needs.

NEARLY 67 TONS OF FLOOD DEBRIS COLLECTED 
City crews have collected nearly 67 tons of flood-related debris from impacted areas through Tuesday. 

That includes 39.98 tons collected by the Refuse Department on Tuesday and 26.96 tons collected by the Street Department on Monday and Tuesday. 

In addition, Street crews have collected and reused approximately 25 tons of gravel and fill material each day to address flood-damaged roadways and other infrastructure. 

The nearly 67-ton total does not include additional flood-related material that could not be taken to the transfer station, including tree roots, mud and muck. 

Crews continue clearing debris, addressing drainage issues and assessing damaged roadways throughout impacted areas. 

CLEANUP SUPPLIES REACHING RESIDENTS 
Approximately 41 households picked up cleaning and recovery supplies at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on August 18, representing residents from approximately 25 streets and areas in Charleston and Kanawha County. 

State support has also brought 350 flood cleanup kits, 100 mops and 100 shovels to assist with recovery efforts. 

The King Center remains a pickup location for residents who need cleaning supplies and a drop-off location for those wishing to donate supplies. 

VOLUNTEERS + COMMUNITY PARTNERS 
The Methodist Disaster Response Team is assisting with muck-outs at approximately 20 households today. 

Community partners continue providing meals and other assistance. United Way Central West Virginia has provided approximately 240 bagged meals and sandwiches. The Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association has provided hundreds of meals throughout flood-impacted areas. St. Anthony Catholic Church will also provide a free spaghetti dinner beginning at 4 p.m. today, available for dine-in or takeout while supplies last. 

NEED HELP?
As of this morning, WV 211 had fielded approximately 30 flood-related calls since Monday morning and can connect residents with available resources. Call specialists can also help residents complete the damage survey. 

In addition, the City of Charleston continues to field flood-related inquiries by phone and social media, helping residents access information, report concerns, and connect with available resources. This includes more than a dozen direct constituent inquiries, as well as ongoing questions and requests addressed through the City’s social media channels.

STORM RESPONSE UPDATE | AUGUST 17, 8:37 PM 

This evening, Mayor Amy Goodwin declared a State of Emergency in the City of Charleston in response to significant flooding and storm damage from the August 16 storms. The declaration provides the City additional flexibility to coordinate personnel, equipment and resources as response, damage assessment, cleanup and recovery efforts continue.

Earlier today, Mayor Goodwin and Chad Jones, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, visited impacted areas, speaking with residents and assessing damage throughout the community.

City crews have been working since yesterday to clear debris and address impacted roadways and drainage issues. The Charleston Police Department has also increased patrols in affected neighborhoods to assist residents and help connect them with available resources.

Assessment, cleanup and response efforts remain ongoing across impacted areas.

TETANUS SHOTS 

The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department's Clinic Team will be giving free tetanus and Hepatitis A shots to those affected by flooding Tuesday, August 18.   

• 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM  | Garrison Avenue – underneath the interstate bridge  
• 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM | Sugar Creek – mouth of Sugar Creek Drive off of Sissonville Drive at the former Charleston Fire Station.  

Anyone unable to make it to one of the mobile clinics can go to KCHD's location at 108 Lee St. E. 

TRASH COLLECTION

Trash collection will remain on its normal schedule. 

Residents may place flood-related debris out for regular trash collection.  

ROAD REPAIR WORK 

WV Paving will conduct repair work on Edgewood Drive, from Washington Street to Beech Avenue, from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. 

The work will address a section of roadway damaged by flooding. Motorists should use an alternate route and avoid traveling through the affected section of Edgewood Drive while repairs are underway. 

CPD INCREASES PATROLS IN FLOOD IMPACTED AREAS 

The Charleston Police Department is increasing patrols in several of the hardest-hit areas, including: 

Wertz Avenue • Garrison Avenue • Sugar Creek Drive • Scraggs Drive • Hanna Drive • Greenbrier Street • Chandler Drive 

Officers will maintain an increased presence in these areas as residents begin cleanup and recovery efforts. Officers will also be available to assist residents and help connect those impacted by flooding with available resources.

KCHD Giving Free Hep A And Tetanus Shots In Charleston To Flood Victims
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department's Clinic Team will be out and about in Charleston tomorrow – Tuesday, Aug. 18 – giving free tetanus and Hepatitis A shots to those affected by flooding. 

The first shot clinic will be under the interstate bridge on Garrison Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The second clinic will be at the mouth of Sugar Creek Drive off of Sissonville Drive at the old Charleston Fire Station from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. 

If people cannot make it to one of the mobile clinics, shots also will be available at KCHD's location at 108 Lee St. E.

We also will have limited supplies to give out – gloves and disinfecting wipes.

The Charleston Police Department is increasing patrols in areas impacted by flooding from the August 16 storms as City teams continue response and assessment efforts.

Additional patrols will focus on several of the hardest-hit areas, including:

• Garrison Avenue
• Sugar Creek Drive
• Scraggs Drive
• Hanna Drive
• Greenbrier Street
• Chandler Drive
